Holly’s Thoughts on YSSC + EAP – May

The first Young Singer Songwriter Club session!

The shiny new Young Singer Songwriter club kicked off on the 8th May! I was really looking forward to it as I attended the group when it was first run by (the wonderful) Laura Loft years ago. I learnt loads and was so inspired by the club back then, it’s so exciting to be involved in the new and improved version! Laura has been joined by the brilliant Kate Graham from Soundlaunch and she is bringing a lot of great songwriting and industry advice for emerging artists!

The club is held at Exeter Phoenix in their cool new workshop space, with exposed brick and fairy lights  We started by chatting about the future of the club and getting to know each other a bit. We talked about what each person is interested in growing their skills in, and about building confidence, maybe by singing and writing with other people.

Then we got into some music! We had a jam, sang some songs together and played around with different instruments. A couple of people shared some original songs with the group which were amazing!

We decided to do some song writing, and after a discussion about unfortunate hair dyeing stories, we used our own past hair mishaps as inspiration! We plan to work on the hair song more next session.

We had a short break before the last part of the session: the Emerging Artists Platform stage! This is such a good chance for the members of the YSS Club to perform to an audience and build their confidence performing live.

We played the covers we’d worked on earlier to the audience, which was loads of fun and a really good end to the evening.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first session and cant wait for the next one- the 12th June! Head to the Phoenix website for more info: http://www.exeterphoenix.org.uk/events/young-singer-songwriter-workshop-2/

I think this group has a very exciting future… so come along for jams, writing, and performing!

And if writing/singing/performing isn’t your thing, come down to the live lounge (7-8pm) to support the group, grab a drink from the cafe and enjoy some music from the EAP stage! 12th of June Live Lounge head liners: ARBOR
